The Poor Are Getting ... Richer - The Numbers


Growth of GDP per Capita

1980s - 1.4%

2000s - 4.4%

Number of Countries classified as Low Income

(GDP per Capita < $1000)

2003 - 60 countries

Today - 39 countries

Number of People Living in Absolute Poverty

(< $1.25 per day)

2005 - 1.3 billion

2010 - 0.9 billion


No longer are the rich getter richer and the poor are getting poorer.

  1. I would disagree, if you take china out of those numbers the poor are less poor now. These numbers are inflated because of China's huge population.
